I am listening to the audio book “Anne Frank Remembered” by Miep Gies. This is an excellent book/audio book. It is spell binding and so well written. Miep is one of the people who hid Anne Frank’s family. She gives a very detailed account with emotion to the years building up to Germany takeover and the war.
She describes how the people had registered their family information in a census. People had to identify Jewish heritage back to their grandparents (this was before trouble started). When the Germans took over they had all the information they needed to round up the Jews.
Miep noted “If only we would have known and not shared that information on the census . . .” If only the Jews would have lied to the government, the Germans would have had a difficult time hunting them down. If they had only known.
I’m not comparing our current government to the Nazis. However, as I fill out more and more forms giving my information away I wonder. As I fill in a “National Health Insurance Form” I now allow the government to enter one more facet of my life.
I hope that someday we don’t say “if we had only known . . .”
