SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGO) — A 13-year-old boy holding a replica assault rifle was fatally shot by deputies in Santa Rosa yesterday.
According the Press Democrat, the boy’s father, Rodrigo Lopez, identified the teen as Andy Lopez and said he had been carrying a toy gun that belonged to a friend.
The shooting happened yesterday around 3 p.m. Two Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies were patrolling near Mooreland Avenue and West Robles Avenue. Police said they saw a male with an assault weapon and they called for backup and ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he did not and they fired at him several times. Andy died at the scene.
Investigators said the gun resembles an assault weapon, like an AK 47. It’s not clear if it was a working pellet or BB gun. They say they also found a plastic handgun in the boy’s waistband.
The deputies who shot the boy are on leave. Santa Rosa police, Petaluma police and district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting.
