UN calls on Syria to allow more humanitarian aid as photos show devastated region

Photos of the apocalyptic-looking Yarmouk section of Damascus, where some of the heaviest fighting in the region has taken place, accompanied UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s urging of the Syrian government to allow more humanitarian aid into the country. An estimated 100,000 have been trapped in the region and several have died of hunger-related causes.

For as far as the camera can see, the starving masses wait amid the wreckage of Damascus for United Nations food handouts in haunting photos that have surfaced from the Syrian civil war.
