Let’s talk about guns since everyone else is. We’ll start with some basic facts before getting to emotion.
Americans love their guns. There are an estimated 270-310 million guns in circulation in America. That number looks like this: 310,000,000. That is about one gun for every man, woman, and child. Some stats place it at 89 guns for every 100 people.
The biggest gun salesman in the country for the last 6 years is our leader – President Obama. Gun sales have been through the roof since he took office and every time he threatens more gun controls, people run out and buy more guns and ammunition.
Applications for background checks soared to over 21 million in 2013 up from 16 million in 2012. The fastest growing segment of gun buyers – women.
Here is a surprise – no one knows the exact number of gun sales because no one is tracking them. We only track the applications for background checks. This number doesn’t reveal how many guns people are buying. They could buy 3 guns off that application.
So we have a lot of guns in the country with more being sold every day. If we stopped ALL gun sales today, we will still have the 310,000,000 guns in possession. If we pass a law to remove 1 million guns off the streets each year and do not sell one more (that will never happen) it will take 310 years to remove every gun. By that point we will all have died from global warming (sorry).
Ranking by country: America has 4.8 homicides by gun per 100,000 people every year. Canada has 1.6 and England has 1.2. The highest countries for gun related deaths are in Africa and Central America. Some of those countries also have the fewest guns per population. I guess it really does matter who is holding the guns.
Disclaimer: I don’t own a gun (well I have a bb gun that I use to scare away squirrels on my bird feeder). I like guns but I’m also afraid of them so I don’t choose to have one around. I figure if something needs to be locked up because it is dangerous, it shouldn’t be in my house with children. That’s just my opinion.
